The Great Khali is the ring name of Dalip Singh Rana, an Indian American professional wrestler, actress, and promoter. He is presently affiliated with the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). He has used several ring names in a career spanning 17 years, the most prominent of which is ‘The Great Khali.’

Early Life of Dalip Singh Rana (The Great Khali)

Dalip Singh Rana was born on August 27, 1972, to parents Jwala Ram and Tandi Devi in Dhiraina, a tiny village in Sirmour district in Himachal Pradesh, India. They have six other children beside him.

He grew up with little education and had to support his family from an early age. He worked as a roadside laborer for a time and then relocated to Shimla to serve as a security guard. Here he was noticed by Punjab’s former police chief Mahal Singh Bhullar, who is renowned for helping several players from Punjab Police attain international recognition. He offered Rana a job with the Punjab Police.

Though at first reluctant to leave his home state, Rana accepted the job in 1993 when his brother was also offered a similar one. They moved to Jalandhar together, and Rana took up wrestling which he practiced at the local gym.

Khali started his career as a police officer. He initiated his wrestling career in All Pro Wrestling (APW) in 2000.  He wrestled under the ring name, Giant Singh. Afterward, he wrestled in companies like, “World Wrestling Championship”, “New Japan Pro Wrestling”, and others. He rose to fame after he joined World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2006. Under WWE, he wrestled in Deep South Wrestling. Afterward, he got involved in various feuds with other wrestlers. During 2006 and 2007, he defeated Rey Mysterio and The Undertaker.

After being drafted to the RAW brand, he won the title of “WWE Heavyweight Champion” On July 17, 2007. Similarly, he went on to win several titles. He was on-and-off with the WWE. His agreement with the WWE expired on November 2014. Then in 2015, he opened his own wrestling school in Punjab, India.

As an actor and TV personality, he has starred in several TV shows. Additionally, he appeared in films like, “The Longest Yard”, “MacGruber”, “Kushti”, and others.

  • The Great Khali is a one-time “WWE World Heavyweight Champion.” He received the belt on July 17, 2007, after winning the royal 20-man battle. The episode of ‘ SmackDown ‘ was broadcast on July 20.
  • He won a ‘Slammy Award’ for the ‘“Damn!” Moment of the Year’ in 2008 for ‘Khali Kiss Cam’.

The Great Khali married Harminder Kaur’s daughter on February 27, 2002. Their daughter Avleen was born on 26 February 2014, twelve years after the marriage. On February 20, 2014, he was granted naturalized US citizenship alongside 1,614 others in a session of court held at the ‘M.O. Campbell Educational Center’ in Houston, Texas.

He underwent surgery on July 26, 2012, to remove a tumor on his pituitary gland that caused his acromegaly. He displays some of the most obvious signs of the disorder, including prominent eyebrows, chin protrusion, and massive ears.

He is a devout Hindu and was an ardent follower of the Indian spiritual leader AshutoshMaharaj. He neither smokes nor consumes alcohol.
